Road Trip to Montana and Yellowstone

A couple of years back, a group of family and friends—about 18 of us in total—took a road trip from Chicago out to Montana and Yellowstone. We rented an RV and a couple of large SUVs, and all drove together. We had a fantastic time seeing the sights, going rafting, and exploring parks.

What made the trip memorable, however, was that the RV we rented was not well taken care of, so the toilet flap broke, and the entire RV smelled like a porta-potty. We had to stop and buy Fabuloso cleaner to pour down it every now and again to keep the smell at bay a bit.

Our rearview mirror was broken as well, so to switch lanes, we had to use my girlfriend’s mother’s cane to hold out the window to push it into place so you could see if the road was clear to change lanes and pass another vehicle. That made it an interesting trip.

Explore the Garden of One Thousand Buddhas

Exploring the Garden of One Thousand Buddhas in Arlee, Montana, is the most unique experience I had visiting Montana. Spanning across ten acres of land, this 750-foot circular monument looks like the Wheel of Dharma, representing the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism.

I was surprised to find such a Buddhist statuary thousands of miles away from the birthplace of Buddhism. Visiting the public park in September, I got a chance to attend the annual Peace Festival. It was a memorable experience where I discovered the beautiful tradition of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism. There was a sense of enlightenment that brought me closer to my inner self.

This garden lies on the route to Glacier National Park, and you can explore the nearby medicinal hot springs to add physical benefits of visiting the place with spiritual uplifting. I’d advise travelers who are planning their Montana trip to travel over this spectacular garden to immerse themselves in tranquility.

Venture Deep Into Glacier National Park

One of my most unique experiences in Montana has to be when I ventured deep into Glacier National Park. I had heard so much about its wild beauty, but nothing quite prepared me for the sheer majesty of the place. The landscape feels almost otherworldly—the kind of scenery that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a postcard, except you’re actually there, right in the middle of it.

One memory that really stands out was an early morning by Lake McDonald. I had camped out the night before, and when I woke up, the lake was so still it perfectly mirrored the mountains surrounding it. The air was crisp, the sky was starting to warm with the first rays of sunlight, and it was just me, my coffee, and this serene, untouched world. It was one of those rare travel moments where everything feels timeless, and you’re completely in tune with nature.

Another unforgettable part of that trip was hiking the Highline Trail. If you’ve never done it, it’s one of those must-hikes that gives you panoramic views for miles. At one point, I was walking along this narrow stretch carved into the mountainside, with steep drop-offs and these jaw-dropping vistas that made every step feel exhilarating. The wildlife was incredible, too. I remember this mountain goat just wandering across the path in front of me like it owned the place (which, in a way, it does!).

But the most surreal moment was spotting a mother grizzly and her cubs from a safe distance. I’ve seen plenty of wildlife while traveling, but this was different. There’s something humbling about watching such a powerful animal in its natural habitat, completely unbothered by your presence. It reminds you that you’re just a visitor in their world.
